My first ever oil-based still life was created at Huntington Fine Arts. First, I sketched out the large shapes that made up the overall composition. When I rendered the still life, I only used burnt umber before going in with other colors and finer details. This process helped me map out everything so that the objects in the frame were accurately placed. I challenged myself to translate the essence of three-dimensional objects into a flat form. Throughout the process, I experimented with color and improved my ability to create new tones achieving my desired palette.

Oil Paint on Canvas

In this self-directed painting, I wanted to use the avocado’s beauty to prove that perfection was just an illusion. Usually, when we envision an avocado, we see that perfectly green, ripe fruit that appears flawless. I wanted to celebrate

the avocado’s imperfect form, highlighting its blemishes and aging imperfections.

I sketched out the avocado using charcoal and translated the basic geometric shapes. Then I moved on to oil paint, where I used my understanding of light in photography to recreate the lighting in the painting.
